Dangers Associated with Not Replacing Missing Teeth

There are numerous reasons you may be missing teeth. It could be that you never had one grow in, it was pulled because of decay or an abscess, trauma, or even an injury.

However, if you do have a missing tooth, you should seriously consider getting a replacement tooth in that area as soon as you can. It could save you from a lifetime of problems.

When You Do Not Replace a Missing Tooth, Your Mouth Could Suffer the Consequences

There are quite a few things that can happen when you have a missing tooth. First, the jawbone can begin to reabsorb itself and the integrity of the bone where the tooth once was can become lost.

Second, the teeth surrounding the missing tooth can shift, causing not only a problematic bite, but pain and discomfort when you go to chew up your food. Also, your gums can be at higher risk for gum disease in the area where the tooth once was.

You have numerous options when it comes to replacing missing teeth now. You can have dentures if you are missing a lot of teeth or an entire arch, bridges for smaller areas of the mouth where only a few teeth are missing, dental implants where you can replace a single tooth or an entire arch at once, and even crowns that can be cemented to nearby teeth to keep your mouth healthy.

If you have missing teeth, talk with your dentist about what your replacement options are. The sooner you replace that missing tooth after it is extracted, the less likely you are to face the consequences of having no tooth there.

Your teeth can shift very quickly following an extraction, so contact our office about replacement as soon as your mouth has healed up.
