What to Do When You Have a Dental Emergency on Vacation

Posted on 7/15/2016 by Janie Bell
A red sign with white lettering on it saying emergency.Summer is the time for vacation and relaxation. To avoid having dental problems put a damper on your plans, it is always best to plan ahead and schedule an appointment with our office before you leave on your trip.

But what happens when you have a dental emergency while you are on vacation?

Knocked-out Tooth

If your tooth gets knocked out, make sure to keep the tooth moist at all times. First, rinse off the tooth with warm water to make sure it is clean. If you can put the tooth back into the socket, do so without touching the root. If you cannot keep the tooth in the socket, place the tooth in a small container of milk or saliva until you can get to a dentist. Seeing a dentist as soon as possible means there is a better chance of your tooth being saved.

Chipped or Cracked Tooth

Rinse your mouth with warm water, and then stop any bleeding with gentle pressure using gauze. If the damage is minor, you may be able to wait until normal office hours the next day to see a dental care provider. However, if the damage to the tooth is severe, you should seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Who to Contact

Normally, when you have a dental emergency, you would contact your usual dental office, but when you are out of state or out of the country, you probably will not get back home in time to treat the injury. You have a few options for finding a dental professional while travelling:

•  Contact local dental societies to find a dental office near you.
•  Ask the concierge at your hotel about local dentists they recommend.
•  If you are out of the country, contact the US Embassy for a list of local dental care providers.

If you have any questions about how to prepare your smile for your vacation and what steps to take in a dental emergency, contact our office today.
