![]() Well, tooth sensitivity is a blanket term used to describe hypersensitivity of the dentin or tooth root. Gum disease and receding gums are usually to blame, and as more of the tooth that isn't protected by the enamel becomes exposed, the more likely it will bet experience irritation. How Can Sugar Contribute to Sensitivity? As much as we all love sugary treats, they can be quite damaging to the teeth. Sugar can wear away the protective enamel of the teeth, potentially causing tooth sensitivity.Sweet foods are high in fermentable carbohydrates that combine with oral bacteria to create acids that contribute to tooth erosion. The more sugar that is in the food the more acid the mouth will produce. When you continue to eat these foods, the sugary flavor can actually trigger the sensitivity pain due to enamel erosion. What Can You Do about Sensitive Teeth? If you have sugar sensitivity, there are some steps that you can take to ease your discomfort. Good oral hygiene is crucial, and you can use toothpaste that is specifically designed for sensitive teeth that will clean your teeth without enamel irritation. You should also change your eating habits in order to avoid sugary snacks in favor of fruits and vegetables. Soda and other sugary drinks should also be switched out for water, which will help to keep your teeth free of bacteria and acid. Sugar free gum can also keep your mouth healthy by ensuring that you had enough saliva in your mouth. If these strategies don't help with your tooth sensitivity, you should contact our office to set up an appointment to discuss other treatment methods. |
